Our Reredos: A Welcoming Beacon of Faith
In the heart of our sanctuary will stand a 20-foot reredos, a masterpiece crafted from wood and adorned with faux marble and delicate gold leaf accents. This structure enhances both the visual and spiritual aesthetics of our worship space, providing a focal point that draws the congregation into a deeper experience of the sacred.
What is a Reredos?
A reredos is an ornamental structure placed behind the altar in a church, often decorated with religious iconography such as statues, paintings, or carvings. Its primary purpose is to enhance the beauty and spiritual atmosphere of the sanctuary, directing attention towards the altar.
Difference Between a Retablo and a Reredos
While both reredoses and retablos are ornamental structures associated with altars, they serve different purposes and have distinct characteristics. A reredos is a screen or structure located behind the altar, often large and integrated into the architecture of the church. In contrast, a retablo, which is Spanish for "altarpiece," typically refers to a framed painting or a series of panels placed directly on or above the altar.

Enhancing Our Community's Experience
Our reredos will be a stunning example of sacred art, flanked by statues of Our Lady and St. Ann. At its center, it cradles the new Tabernacle, serving as a focal point for our church. The detailed craftsmanship and thoughtful placement of each element invite worshippers to deepen their connection to the mysteries celebrated in the Mass. The crucifix, at the center, draws attention to the sacrificial act of Jesus on the cross during the Eucharist, enriching the visual and spiritual experience for our community.
This reredos is not merely a decorative element but a profound expression of faith and devotion. Its rich history, intricate design, and spiritual significance contribute to a more profound and reverent worship experience. By enhancing our Romanesque bones, we create a worship space that honors our heritage while inspiring our community to live out their faith with renewed vigor and devotion.
